About Us

Plumbers & Steamfitters 400 is comprised of approximately 2,000 members serving eighteen counties in Northeast Wisconsin. We are a local union that is affiliated with the United Association of Plumbers & Pipefitters, comprised of approximately 360,000 members across the U. S and Canada. Our main purpose is to provide training for our members and qualified manpower to our 125 signatory contractors for all aspects of the plumbing and piping fitting industry.

Training

Local 400 owns and operates a 41,000 sq. ft. training center in Kaukauna and a 5,600 sq. ft. satellite training center in Fond du Lac. Apprenticeship programs are available in plumbing, steam fitting, HVAC/R service and pipe fabrication as well as upgrade training for journeymen. Industry recognized certifications available include CFC recovery, medical gas installation, valve repair, backflow prevention (repair & installation), rigging and numerous weld procedures. Local 400 has a full-time training coordinator and full-time welding coordinator on staff, allowing us to tailor and implement training to specific job and contractor needs. Local 400 invests an average of over $900,000 annually for training and has secured an additional $800,000 in grants from the United Association for upgrading training-related equipment at our two facilities.

Manpower

Local 400 operates a referral system that supplies qualified manpower to its signatory contractors. This is a skill-based referral system with the primary purpose of providing the contractor/customer with the craft person that possesses the necessary skills for specific job requirements. All referrals are filled on a non-discriminatory basis.

Community Service

The members of Local 400 take pride in being a part of and helping to serve our communities. This can be seen in our involvement and contributions to such organizations as the Cerebral Palsy Telethon, Special Olympics, Rebuilding Together and the Salvation Army, to name a few. The Local also partners each year with the Mechanical Contractors Association and area businesses to run the “Heats On Program”. This program provides for the inspection of home heating systems including any needed repairs and the installation of carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in homes of low-income elderly in Brown & Outagamie Counties – all at no cost to the homeowner.

Labor/Management

Local 400 understands that establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship with our signatory contractors will best serve all parties in the industry, especially the end user. Examples of that relationship can be seen in the joint management of our apprenticeship programs, which are the best available anywhere. Our mandatory drug-testing program provides our customers with a drug-free workforce and the extra measure of safety and productivity that comes with it. We have also partnered with the Mechanical Contractors Association in a joint labor/management sponsorship of the New North--totaling $60,000 over three years.
