Substance Abuse ...
ü Need for increased amounts of alcohol/drug in order to achieve
intoxication or desired effect
ü Continued use of alcohol/drug despite knowledge that it’s causing
problems at work and/or at home
ü Continued use under physically hazardous conditions such as
driving, operating machines, equipment, etc.

ü Repeated attempts to cut down
ü Spending a great deal of time and energy to get the alcohol/drug
ü Use of alcohol/drug in larger amounts and/or over a longer period
of time than intended
ü Frequent intoxication
ü Spending a great deal of time recovering from the effects of
alcohol/drug
ü Increased time spent away from important social, occupational or
recreational activities because of alcohol/drug abuse
ü Frequent withdrawal symptoms — experiencing “the jitters”, rapid
heart beat, sweating, nausea when alcohol/drug is not taken
